Jewish Outreach

Outreach Committee
Volunteers will serve on the outreach committee, which oversees the Share-A-Shabbat program, Birth Baskets, Send-A-Friend and the JFS/ARC collaboration. This committee will meet once per month to coordinate ongoing activities as well as to develop and implement new ideas/programs.

Share-A-Shabbat
This program is geared to elderly, usually homebound individuals or families, who desire to share Shabbat rituals and dinner and are unable to do so on their own. Northern Metropolitan kitchens, under subsidy by JFS, provide kosher food for the monthly meal on a designated Friday, with one alternate date. The volunteer(s) pick up the meals on the afternoon of the designated date and bring them to the home of the recipients. The Shabbat rituals are performed and the volunteer(s) and recipients eat their meals together. This provides a double mitzvah for the recipients and the volunteers who enjoy the companionship and rituals of the Shabbat at the same time.

Birth Baskets
Birth baskets are assembled by volunteers at Jewish Family Service and are stored there until delivery. Volunteers then deliver the birth baskets to new mothers while they are in Good Samaritan or Nyack Hospital. The objectives are to create Jewish community outreach to new mothers, provide education regarding Jewish traditions surrounding the birth of a child, and provide information about services and resources in the Jewish Community. Volunteers deliver the baskets, welcome the newborn into the community and provide information about Jewish Family Service and other resources available to the family.

JFS/ARC Collaboration
In collaboration with Rockland ARC and synagogues in the area, JFS volunteers celebrate Jewish holidays with group homes in the County. A synagogue is matched with an individual group home and volunteers visit and plan events to celebrate Jewish holidays throughout the year. There is always a Chanukah and Purim celebration, as well as a summer Bar-B-Que.
